8. History 8

Again during the closed season ground upgrades were planned. A few were undertaken with Health & Safety being the priority. Unfortunately a few were put on the back-burner but will hopefully be tackled at a later date.

As with all change of season new faces come in with others moving on. As pre-season training began it was pleasing to see that we had attracted at 6/7 new faces down meaning that we are going in the right direction regarding progress. We are seen as the most progressed football club in the Doncaster area and will continue to make those steps as far as the finances let us.

On the field The First and Reserves Teams continued with the same successful management staff but the club made the decision that due to the tightening of the purse strings we were unable to continue with the Junior sides.

The BARIS NCEL was raised to accommodate 22 teams in both divisions and made the decision to drop two of the cup competitions due to the increased league fixtures. The Division One Cup, The Wilkinson Sword Trophy and [ironically as we had qualified] The Presidents Cup were the ones to be dropped.

After a slow start the First team started to gel around Christmas time and after looking worryingly at relegation at this time, managed to rally round and finished 18th and 10 points clear of the re-election places, 16 points clear of the eventual relegated team, fellow Doncaster team, Askern Villa. Success in the Cup competitions disappeared as soon as they appeared. The only glimpse of a decent run came in the County Cup. A superb win at Premier Division Parkgate set-up a Quarter-Final tie against a Staveley MW side that was in transition. Unfortunately the run was ended with 2 late goals. Other highlights of the season were a rare double over 'bogey-side' Yorkshire Amateur and another over an ever improving Grimsby Borough side, and also holding both promoted sides to draws on their own turf.

The Reserves were in a very strong position for most of the early season but then as teams started to drop out of the Division (and as a result records expunged) then points were removed and they fell to near the bottom of the table after only losing a couple of games. They managed to recover from this and finished 5th some '19' points behind Champions Denaby Utd. Their best form was left for the Premier Division Knock-out Cup where 2nd half goals from Scott Maughan and Marcel Chipamunga saw off Sutton Rovers at Yorkshire Main's ground, a 2nd win in three seasons.

More honours came off-field when The Soccer Club Swap Shop voted our Matchday magazine best in NCEL Division One for a third season running. Congratulations to Glen Wilson for carrying on the tradition set previously. Unfortunately Glen had to relinquish the post for the next season due to work commitments.
