Oli Nowak’s second goal of the season was enough to see Rossington Main beat Campion 1-0 and extend their unbeaten run in all competitions to ten games at the Anytime Couriers Stadium.
The visitors impressed all night and played with a real confidence about them throughout the game but had to wait 64 minutes to get off the mark.
Rosso worked the ball to the left before Ross Hannah’s ball found Nowak who flung himself at the cross to see his ball nestle in the back of the net.
Although Main had the better of the contest, it was The Red & Blacks who had the initial impetus as Jamie Allsop centred for the attacker, who couldn’t get his head over the ball to trouble Kian Johnson’s goal.
But from there Rosso began to assert control. Excitement was raised as a familiar Mason Warren corner was to be attacked by Reece Fielding, though this time Main’s top goalscorer could only loop his effort onto the roof of the net.
Later in the first half, Main opted to try and catch Campion napping with Ollie Currie playing a quick free-kick to Hannah, who would unleash an audacious shot from 35-yards. Whilst capable of the spectacular, the striker was unable to worry the goalkeeper on this occasion.
Towards the end of the half, Rossington had cause for concern when Shay Muirhead’s deflected header had the possibility to end up anywhere but gratefully landed in Johnson’s clutches.
Main were made to work hard for their opening just after the hour, as new signing Rob Guilfoyle’s cross was unable to find a blue shirt. But a poor clearance allowed Warren to keep the move alive by finding Hannah to his left, who would clip a perfectly weighted ball to Nowak for the winger to duck under and steer home from close range with a diving header.
Campion huffed and puffed to get back into the game but did little to bloody the nose of the Main defence, as several crosses failed to put Johnson under any real pressure.
Rosso saw the game out, claiming a vital and much-needed three points to shoot up the league and set up a tasty clash with the division’s table-toppers Dearne & District on Saturday.
Rosso XI: (GK) Johnson, Wainwright, Green, Watson, Fielding, Currie, Warren, Mitchell, Guilfoyle (83’ Mohamed), Hannah (72’ Gibbons), Nowak.
