A dominant performance was rewarded with a convincing 4-0 victory over league leaders Dearne & District in Doncaster’s highest-ranked Non-League clash.
Oli Nowak hit a brace which included an early goal-of-the-season contender, Rob Guilfoyle struck on his home debut and Myron Gibbons found himself back among the goals to round off the scoring in a game that also featured a penalty save and red card.
Ben Hunter and Greg Young named an unchanged XI for the first time this campaign following the midweek win at Campion.
In a scintillating start, Rosso raced into the lead after just two minutes. Nowak jinked and dazzled his way past two defenders to drive into the box and neatly pass the ball beyond Ellis Pickard to get Main off to a dream start inside just two minutes.
Either team could have followed that up with a second goal of the afternoon as Guilfoyle saw a long-range effort just curl away from the keeper’ before the visitors clipped over the bar from inside the six-yard box.
On seven minutes, the referee blew for a rather contentious foul from Harry Mitchell just inside the area. Kian Johnson remained composed however, getting down low to smother the penalty to his right-hand side and keep his team in the driving seat.
Dearne did have an opportunity to atone for their earlier miss when they found themselves through on goal, but the forward got his technique wrong in attempting to round Johnson and the shot-stopper gratefully collected.
From that move, Oscar Wainwright flew up the right flank to play in Nowak who turned to create shooting space from the inside right, bending the wrong side of the post by mere centimetres.
From here, Main had assumed control and Guilfoyle linked up superbly with Ross Hannah to double the lead. The latter picked up Mason Warren’s flicked ball, controlling under pressure to feed his strike partner, who produced a lovely high finish over Pickard to grab his first goal in Rosso colours.
With Rossington firmly in the ascendancy, it wasn’t long before two turned to three as Nowak stunned with an unbelievable strike that will no doubt be among the first on his highlight reel. With the winger lurking outside the penalty area, a headed clearance made its way to his vicinity with the bounce of the ball being the only invitation needed to fire a reverse half-volley straight into the postage stamp, leaving the goalkeeper no chance.
More chances followed in the second half too with Hannah the danger man looking to get in on the fun, seeing a shot from Wainwright’s low cross blocked before being forced just wide after bursting past Owen Fieldsend.
Things went from bad to worse for Zeph Thomas’ side when no sooner had he entered the pitch; Jack Birks was sent for an early bath after picking up a second yellow card just 20 minutes after replacing Luke Skelton.
And their misery was compounded on 88 minutes as Mohssen Mohamed did brilliantly to time his pass to perfection and supply the racing Gibbons, who produced a calm finish between the legs of Pickard.
And it could have been five as man of the match Mitchell once again won back the ball for his team to attack with Harry Wilson the beneficiary this time, beating two but just unable to keep his effort on target.
The final whistle blew and marked Rosso’s 11th straight game without defeat as the 311-strong crowd were treated to a compelling display with Hunter and Young’s men moving to within two points of the play-offs.
Rosso XI: (GK) Johnson, Wainwright, Green, Watson, Fielding, Currie (79’ Wilson), Warren (83’ Holloway), Mitchell, Guilfoyle (79’ Mohamed), Hannah (66’ Gibbons), Nowak (75’ Warne).
