Doncaster’s highest ranked Non-League side dumped Dronfield out of the Isuzu FA Vase to see Rosso progress into first round proper for the first time in 16 years.
Manager Greg Young opened the scoring midway through the first half with a guided header from a corner. After the break Mitch Langton, Paul Sherburn and Khalid Suleiman all got on the scoresheet to confirm a solid four-goal victory on a rainy South Yorkshire afternoon.
The FA Vase second round qualifying unfolded in a drizzly Rossington with the hosts commanding a strong start in the opening minutes. The first major opportunity came on the 11 minute after Lewis Naylor in-goal for Dronfield made the initial near post save before both Langton and Ross Hannah saw their attempts scrambled away from the mouth of the goal.
After a short stoppage due to Hannah requiring treatment for his involvement in the previous goal opportunity, Rosso’s manager Young opened the scoring with a solid header into the heart of the Dronfield goal following a well place corner kick.
Following Rosso’s opener, Young’s side looked ready to double their lead however, Sherburn’s pass across to our number ten saw Hannah ready and waiting to slot it home although, a Dronfield man was there and managed to intercept before this could happen.
Dronfield then grew into the game with Arran Bovill causing a slight nuisance up top for the visitors however, Dronfield’s number eight couldn’t quite find a clear strike on goal.
After the break Rosso restarted proceedings hungry for a second and came very close when Will Sutton rattled the far post however, this wouldn’t of stood as he was ruled offside by the assistant referee.
Not long after and on the hour mark, Rosso did double their advantage when captain Langton found himself in-behind clean through on-goal of which, the number four took the ball round Naylor to comfortably slot the game’s second home.
Following an immediate Rosso substitution where Sam Limber came on to replace Brandon Murillo, the hosts looked very worthy of a third after Sherburn’s pass across was put a matter of inches wide by Oliver Nowak who pulled the trigger inside the area.
Rosso again found themselves very close to another as this time Hannah’s effort was save by Naylor and with Limber following in, the ball was too far beyond his feet to put a lace through it.
Two more substitutions followed for Rosso with both Liam King and Hannah being replaced with Khalid Suleiman and Elliott Andrew.
Before Rosso’s final two substitutes where young Rosso players George Noble and Oliver Bowes replaced Cody Prior and Nowak, Sherburn who was on his 216 appearance milestone and making him Rosso’s highest appearance maker since records started in the club’s semi-professional era. He marked this with his 31 goal for the club as the number 11 took aim from outside of the box and with help of a slight deflection, the ball finished in the back of the net.
Rosso’s third goal wasn’t to be the final one as five minutes later on the 84 minute, substitute Suleiman cleanly dispatched a great ball across by Limber of which made it two FA Vase goals in a row for the number 14 following his great finish in the previous round away at Litherland REMYCA.
While the rain continued to pour, the final whistle soon came and went with Rosso booking their place into Monday’s Isuzu FA Vase first round proper draw of which will only be the eighth time out of the 41 times entered that Rosso have reached this stage of the competition.
Rosso XI: Greaves (GK), Murillo (62’ Limber), Sutton, Langton (C), Hough, Young, King (72’ Suleiman), Prior (80’ Noble), Nowak (80’ Bowes), Hannah (72’ Andrew), Sherburn.
