Greg Young’s Rossington Main booked their place in the Emirates FA Cup first round qualifying for the first time in 23 years as they defeated Newark Town in a five-goal thriller at the Kalkut’s Community Stadium.
Rosso came back from behind after an early set back where Louis Czerwak’s initial strike accidentally found it’s way into the back of the net. Inside ten minutes after conceding, Dylan Mantle levelled things before Paul Sherburn fired Rosso in front with a moment of individual brilliance.
After the break Ryan Rushen responded with an equaliser following a Rossington error however, with just under five minutes of regular time remaining, super substitute Elliott Andrew opened his Rosso scoring account in sublime fashion by netting the winner, sending the home fans into pure celebration.
The opening ten minutes of the Emirates FA Cup preliminary tie unfolded with a great chance early on for Rosso of which Newark’s shot-stopper Scott Loach made a good save. Coming out from the back, Ross Hannah did well to switch the ball to Mantle who played in Will Sutton with the number three finding the target but nothing more.
An early injury blow for the hosts followed as Hannah exited the field due to injury and was replaced with another summer signing Archie Micklethwaite.
Newark broke the deadlock on the quarter-of-an-hour mark which was unfortunate for Rosso after clearing the initial ball off the line from Czerwak’s shot-on-goal. The ball then found it’s way accidentally into the back of the net.
Rosso responded six minutes after the setback following a great ball through by the recently subbed on Micklethwaite. The number 18 for the day found Mantle who took on his man and put the ball low and into the far corner beyond Loach to level proceedings.
Three minutes later, the Kalkut’s Community Stadium erupted once more as Rosso’s number two Sherburn, who is currently the longest serving player sent the home fans into pure joy as he delivered a low-driven effort from outside of the box into the bottom left-hand corner to give Rosso the lead.
The first half came to an end with Reece Fielding almost finding the back of the net through a first-half stoppage time corner however, his header veered just narrowly wide.
After the break both sides had chances however, after moving past the halfway stage in the second half it was a nervy few minutes for Rosso of which saw goalkeeper Jordan Greaves deliver multiple good saves to keep the hosts in front.
With 12 minutes of the regular 90 remaining, Newark hit back when Rushen jumped and steered the ball into the net coming out of the 50-50 with the game’s levelling fourth finish.
After two more Rosso substitutions followed and when both sets of supporters where fearing a potential midweek replay, summer signing Elliott who has only just returned from injury and come off the bench for what was only his second competitive appearance for the club. The number 12 for the day latched onto a lovely through ball and with the Newark backline desperately chasing, Elliott kept his cool and slotted the ball home despite Loach getting a hand to it to make DN11 shake.
As expected, a nervy few final minutes followed with every player in Blue putting their body on the line to keep Newark at bay. After Fielding delivered a much needed off-the-line clearance, Rosso’s local born and bred Oliver Bowes thought he had confirmed the win deep into injury time however, despite putting the ball into the back of the net, the goal didn’t stand as the assistant referee raised his flag for offside.
More nerve-racking moments for Rosso followed with Newark winning multiple corners deep into added time however, in front of 248 spectators in Rosso, Doncaster’s highest ranked Non-League side etched their way into their own Emirates FA Cup history by getting the job done and as a result booking their place in Monday’s first round qualifying for only the second time in the 21st century and only their eighth time in the 40 occasions Rosso have been in the Emirates FA Cup.
