Doncaster’s highest ranked Non-League side book their place in the preliminary round of the Emirates FA Cup for only the second time in 16 years with a well-deserved victory over Northamptonshire and FA Cup debutant’s Moulton.
Rosso were two goals in front in the opening 25 minutes via two finishes from each of Paul Sherburn and Cameron Hough. Summer signing and central defender Reece Fielding extended their advantage shortly after the break before Nat Ansu for Moulton gave the visitors hope. In what was a game that Greg Young’s side looked comfortable throughout, Dylan Mantle confirmed the win at the death in front of 129 spectators at the Kalkut’s Community Stadium it was Rosso who advanced.
Rosso appealed for a penalty seconds after the off when Ross Hannah delivered a great ball into the back post of which Sherburn looked to be clearly fouled however, no decision was given apart from a Moulton goal kick.
Ten minutes later Rosso broke the deadlock after a surging run by Will Sutton down the left who teed up Sherburn again at the back post with Rossington’s number seven finding the back of the net.
Straight up the other end after Moulton restarted play, Ansu came close to levelling proceedings as the visitors’ number nine moved the ball around Jordan Greaves in-between the sticks for Rosso however, he could only find the side netting.
Rosso came close to a second in the next few minutes as Adam North provided a couple of good saves in-goal for Moulton. Mitch Langton most notably provided a low and long-driven testing effort which was soon halted at the near post.
On the 25 minute, Rosso double their advantage with a brilliant header from Hough of which finished into the top-right corner following a well worked corner kick.
Rosso almost had a third only for some good goalkeeping by North as Khalid Suleiman was in one-on-one however, the number nine couldn’t get the shot away as the shot-stopper read the play.
After the break, Rosso has their third via another pin-point header following another well-worked assisted corner from Cody Prior. This time Reece Fielding was the man with the nod who fired the ball into the top-corner.
Immediately from the restart and after another Rosso substitution, Moulton came back into the game following a lapse in concentration by the hosts. Moulton’s number nine Ansu found himself in on goal and delivered the low driven shot to find the back of the net.
After more substitutions by Rosso, both Mantle and Archie Micklethwaite came so close to finding Rossington’s fourth and the game’s fifth however, on both occasions they missed the inside of the woodwork by a matter of inches.
If it wasn’t already, Mantle signed, sealed and delivered the victory with a poaching finish after Prior was denied from close range after an unfortunate prevention by the near post.
The final whistle then came and went with Doncaster’s highest ranked Non-League side confirming their place in the next round of the oldest national football competition in the world and also teeing up another exciting home tie against Newark Town or Grantham Town.
