Rossington’s first ever Women’s team match ended in defeat as Millmoor Warriors scored at the death in a nine-goal thriller at Oxford Street.
Trialist 2 gave Rossington the best possible start as the opening goal came in a matter of seconds from the kick-off. Millmoor Warriors’ Claire chipped the goalkeeper 23 minutes later to level the scoreline.
Claire then put the visitors in front shortly after with a close-range finish. Steph Prescott put Rossington back on level terms with a clinical finish three minutes before the interval.
Stacie Moore racked up two well worked goals in the second half before the Warriors hit back three times to defeat Main late on.
The historic day in Rossington started with bang as Andrew Cunningham’s side took the lead after just one minute on the clock. Trialist 2 skipped past Millmoor’s goalkeeper and delivered the first goal of the new era.
Rossington almost doubled their advantage five minutes later as Sarah Black found the target but a great save by Millmoor’s goalkeeper denied Main of a second.
The Warriors worked their way back into the game and scored on the 24 minute following a great dinked effort by Claire. Millmoor’s number 11 smartly lifted the ball over Rossington’s Trialist 1 goalkeeper to draw things back level.
The visitors almost went in front shortly after taking it around Rossington’s shot stopper shortly after but only the side netting could be found.
The Warriors did end up taking the lead on the 32 minute when Claire secured her brace from close-range.
Rossington worked hard to find an equaliser before the break and Cunningham’s side did just that as captain Prescott lead by example with a great finish into the bottom right corner on the 42 minute.
Main came back out of the blocks flying after the break as Moore put Rossington in front on the 51 minute after a well worked goal.
After Main restored their lead, Cunningham’s side continued to push forward and as a result were rewarded when Moore paced it around the goalkeeper to smash home Rossington’s fourth and extend their advantage.
Millmoor set up an interesting last 20 minutes with a goal on the 70 minute. The ball looked to have stayed out after hitting the bar but the Warriors managed to get that one over the line.
Millmoor scored again eight minutes later with a first-class finish which rocketed into the top right corner to make it all-square going into the last ten minutes.
The game played in great spirit was brought to end with the visitors scoring at the death to register an emphatic comeback in the nine-goal thriller. Nevertheless, Cunningham’s side did Rossington proud with a terrific performance in front of a magnificent 351 crowd at Oxford Street.
