Match Report

Main exit the Northern Counties East League Cup following a Declan Howe double under the lights at Oxford Street.

Former Main man Howe drew first blood on the 24 minute following a clinical low driven effort into the far corner.

Main gave it there all in the second half and despite numerous chances and a few controversial decisions going against them, Rossington’s fate was sealed in the second minute of injury time as Howe scored from the spot to secure his brace.

The Trojans were close to taking an extremely early lead following a fiery start by Staveley. Former Main man Howe was denied of a near post goal in the opening minute as Jan Budtz was there to block the shot as Howe’s robust strike shot straight into the side netting.

Rossington soon found their way into the game and came ever so close to drawing first blood moments later. Tyla Bell gave Luke Chadwick a scare in-between the sticks for the Trojans as his header hit the bar and then Brad Grayson thought he had chipped the ball over the keeper but luckily for the visitors, the dinked strike missed narrowly over the crossbar.

Despite a series of good pieces of play by the hosts it was Staveley who scored the opening goal. Former Main man Howe found himself in behind following a lifted through ball. The Trojan’s top goal scorer took no time to dispatch his shot, seeing the ball finish in the bottom left corner.

Reiss Harrison almost delivered a serious goal of the season contender after letting fly from range. His rampant strike bulleted towards the top left corner, but the Trojan’s shot stopper Chadwick performed another brilliant save to deny Main of an equaliser.

Main continued to be dominant after the interval and were denied of huge penalty appeal as Grayson was brought down by a Staveley player. Everyone inside of Oxford Street were convinced it was inside of the area but the referee awarded a free-kick. Grayson stepped up and despite a great strike he couldn’t find a way past Chadwick.

Staveley threatened Main with a dangerous corner kick sent in 13 minutes before time. Thankfully for Rossington, Budtz was there with a huge leap to make the ball his and put a halt to any danger.

Prior to a yellow card for Paul Sherburn and Adam Blakeley, Main gave it there all in search of a late equaliser but it was the Trojan’s who sealed their fate with Howe doubling his tally for the evening and confirming Rossington’s exit at the last eight stage.
