After receiving a bye in the first round and securing a two-goal victory over Denaby Main in round two, Rossington Main host Dinnington Town at Oxford Street for a Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup third-round tie.
Ben Hunter and Greg Young’s side will be hoping to take another step towards silverware, having seen their hopes of reaching the final ended by Worksop Town in both 2022 and last season.
With Main determined to go one better this time around, another positive cup performance will be the aim against challenging opposition. Dinnington Town, who currently compete in the Central Midlands Alliance Premier North at Non-League step 7, sit two levels below the Main and play in the same division as our development team.
However, their ambitions of climbing the football pyramid make them a dangerous opponent, with the club having finished in the top three in each of the last three seasons as they continue to push for promotion. With a squad featuring the likes of former Doncaster Rovers man Craig Nelthorpe, alongside Jordan Turner and other experienced players, Dinnington will arrive believing they can cause an upset and continue their own pursuit of success in the competition.
The two sides have crossed paths in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup on two previous occasions, with one victory apiece. Rossington recorded an emphatic 5-0 away win in
October 2016, with Cain Wellings opening the scoring before Jake Vernon struck a hat-trick and Jason Stokes added a fifth. However, the Main suffered a 1-0 defeat on their previous visit to Dinnington in November 2004. Dinnington have made a competitive start to the current campaign and at the time of writing, they currently sit in 5th place, eight points off the leaders but are in possession of a game in hand.
Their early league results have also included a 4-1 victory over Rossington Main Development’s. After a 1-5 hammering away at Thorncliffe Villa in the previous round, that combined with Dinno’s early-season results underline the threat they pose, and Rosso will need to be at their best to secure a place in the next round.
With a place in the next round at stake, the Main will be looking to make home advantage count and keep their hopes of a Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup final appearance firmly alive while the visitors will be looking to cause an upset under the lights on away soil.
