A professional second-half display with goals from Ollie Currie and Alex Phillipson was enough to see off Denaby Main 2-0 in the Sheffield & Hallamshire Senior Cup Second Round at Oxford Street.

Mason Warren was again the creator in chief with two assists, teeing up both Currie and Phillipson from set-pieces.

Rossington could’ve put the game to bed within the first ten minutes, but their profligacy in front of goal meant they had to remain patient to get their noses in front.

Once ahead, Rosso coolly saw the game out to seal progress into the next stage of the competition.

Greg Young and Ben Hunter handed a start to the star of the weekend’s comebacks, Harry Wilson, and goalscorer Phillipson. Franklyn Gordon, Myron Gibbons and Warren were also called into the XI.

Rosso really took the game to the opposition in the opening stages, threatening goalkeeper Aj Nota several times.

Ross Hannah threatened first after Warren stormed through the centre of the park and picked out the striker lurking on the shoulder of the defensive line, but his first-time shot blazed well over the bar.

That was followed up by some superb one touch football to play Wilson clean through before an exceptional recovery block inside the box averted the danger.

Minutes later, Wilson was played through again after Gibbons spotted his run and slid him on goal with eyes on slipping it through the keeper’s legs, but Nota was alert to get down quick and keep the number eight out.

Rosso kept piling on the pressure with less than ten minutes played, this time Gibbons nicely controlling with his chest, before looking to exploit Nota’s advanced positioning with a looping effort. Unfortunately, the shot didn’t quite have the lift required and the shot-stopper was able to raise an arm to bat away.

And the keeper’ continued to prevent the forward line from breaking the deadlock when Jamie Green picked out Hannah, whose powerful low shot was met by an outstretched foot.

Having done so much of the attacking in the opening 20 minutes, Rossington came close to going into the break behind on numerous instances.

Liam Squire was unable to control a solo effort that had the defence panicked and then minutes later flashed just wide of goal from the right-hand side.

Denaby had success in turning defence into attack towards the end of the half and had their best chance when Luke Watson was picked out in acres of space, cutting in from the left, but delayed in pulling the trigger and ultimately saw a shot blocked by his own teammate.

Rosso responded well after the break, and it took only nine minutes to take the lead. The referee’s decision to award an indirect free-kick for a Denaby pass-back enabled Warren to tee up half-time substitute Currie to slam into the roof of the net from six yards.

Only three minutes passed until Phillipson doubled the advantage. Warren’s in-swinging corner to the back post found the centre half, who was able to beat off his man and nod home for two.

Oscar Wainwright came close to a second goal in the space of a week as he and Wilson played a one-two down the right, setting up the right-back, who side-footed inches wide.

Rossington closed the game out well from there, managing their way to victory with a more clinical second-half. Rosso’s unbeaten run now stands at eight games.
