Rosso’s ten-match unbeaten league run eventually came to an end on Tuesday night as Main suffered defeat at the hands of Thackley.
The visitors were quick off the blocks to edge in front through Reuben Bartkiw, but Rob Guilfoyle restored parity with a penalty on the stroke of half-time. Thackley were to score the decisive goal, however, when a mix-up at the back allowed George Birley a simple finish.
Looking to pick up their first win on the road, The Dennyboys started on the front foot, testing debutant Charlie Noble in the absence of Kian Johnson.
And Thackley were set rolling on five minutes with Luke Brooks evading the sliding challenge of Liam King to set up Bartkiw for a close-range finish through Noble’s legs.
Mason Warren went close to an equaliser when the away side failed to adequately clear Ollie Currie’s cross, landing neatly in the path of the midfielder to connect with a side-footed effort that just looped onto the roof of the net.
With chances at a premium in the first half, Rosso were gifted the chance to draw level from twelve yards when Oscar Wainwright was bundled down inside the box after getting the better of Daniel McDaid.
Guilfoyle stepped up to the mark and duly delivered, beating the keeper’, who dived the right way, into the bottom right-hand corner to hand the striker his second in three league games and give Rosso a potential route back into the game.
The second period started off much like the first with Thackley in the ascendancy, only this time without a goal to show for it.
The biggest chance came the way of McDaid, who was left with his head in his hands when he was unable to trouble Noble from a free header which he sent clear of the crossbar.
Oli Nowak was able to spark some hope that Rosso could wrestle back control of the game when he took on four men with a mazy run into the box that would see him pull his shot just wide of the far post.
From there Main looked the likeliest to take a lead with on-loan Doncaster Rovers winger Lucas McKie finding some joy running at his man and Currie just not quite getting enough lift on his shot to make hay out of Nowak’s excellent searching ball.
King thought he had pulled off the spectacular when he took over from Guilfoyle to bend just narrowly over from distance with Liam Wilson clearly beaten.
Ultimately, Rossington paid the price for their inefficiency in front of goal though when confusion between keeper’ and defence allowed Birley to roll into an empty goal against the run of play.
With Rosso looking to keep their unbeaten run alive, Warren and King linked up well to allow the latter to send a perfect ball to the back post where Nowak was on hand to turn it home had it not been for the critical intervention of McDaid to sniff out the chance and put behind for a corner.
In the end the defensive mishap proved to be the defining moment that would sink Main despite a strong second-half display that on another day would’ve seen them claim another draw.
Rosso XI: (GK) Noble, Wainwright, Green, Watson (89’ Phillipson), King, Currie (73’ Wilson), Warren, Mitchell (73’ Warne), Guilfoyle, Hannah (8’ McKie), Nowak.
