Rossington Main took another away point from their NCEL Premier Division fixture at Penistone Church as a 90th-minute goal from Oli Nowak meant that the game ended 1-1 at The Memorial Ground.

Rosso had to come from behind, though, after conceding only six minutes from kick-off. Penistone presented a threat from corners all evening and it was through this avenue they got their noses in front. The corner was delivered from the left-hand side and helped on by Kian Johnson, only for the ball to be centred for Jack Cawthorn to smack home from close range.

Main responded well and began to grow in confidence with the ball, Fin Hunt and Harry Wilson playing a neat one-two, with help from Ollie Currie’s dummy, to venture towards the Penistone goal. But Hunt’s drive forward from the centre would only subsequently result in a wayward shot from the edge of the box.

Hunt almost found himself on the scoresheet moments later, but this time at the other end. Some good link up play from Lennon O’Grady carved an opportunity for William Heath to flash an effort across goal, which Hunt had to watch trickle wide after instinctively outstretching his left boot.

The second-half started with Main forcing the issue in the attacking third, Mason Warren looking to get on the ball from midfield and unlock the defence, but it was his partner Harry Mitchell that created the first big chance of the half.

The combative number eight snapped into the challenge in the middle of the park to apply the initial pressure, before outjumping a man in black and white to keep the heat on Penistone and find Currie. Currie delayed the pass long on the edge to allow Brad Grayson to surge past him and receive the ball, but his low effort failed to find the target.

Rossington didn’t have it all their own way though in the second half. Reece Fielding did well to marshal the imposing Kieran Ryan after Penistone knocked the ball long, but couldn’t prevent the ball from running to O’Grady, who glanced the ball into space for Nathan Keightley to latch onto. The forward tried squaring the ball for Luca Defalco to tap into an empty net, but his pass was overhit.

With the clock ticking down, Main finally found the leveller they deserved. Johnson pumped a searching ball forward from deep in his own half which was met by the head of Fielding and played behind the defensive line. Ross Hannah harried the defender, forcing a rushed and skewed clearance that would only travel five yards to the lurking Scott Ruthven. The striker’s looping header was just about met by a hand from the recovering goalkeeper, but there was Nowak free at the back to club the ball into a vacant net and salvage a late point.

In fact, Rossington could have snatched maximum points when Penistone failed to adequately clear again from a free-kick, but Mack Warne was left with his hands on his head after seeing his shot on target stopped by Harry Viggars.

Rosso battled hard once more and despite a late Fielding red card, remain unbeaten on the road in the league, with the total undefeated record stretching to six league games. All eyes are now on the cup as Greg Young and Ben Hunter’s side face Route One Rovers and Denaby Main back-to-back in the NCEL League Cup and Sheffield and Hallamshire Senior Cup respectively.
