Rossington Main put another point on the board on a rainy Saturday afternoon at Oxford Street after shaking on a 1-1 draw with Horbury Town.

Myron Gibbons got off the mark for the season in the first half to give Rosso a deserved lead, but Horbury hit back, however, in the 54th minute, Lucas Smith finishing a neat move.

Both teams had chances to nudge in front, but with no team able to capitalise, the spoils were fairly shared.

Rosso had the first chances of the half, Scott Ruthven testing the keeper’ early doors and Greg Young lacing up his boots again to almost nod in Mason Warren’s free-kick.

Horbury’s Aaron Fell must have briefly seen his name in lights when a cleared cross bounced nicely for him to unleash a sweet strike from 25 yards. Fortunately for Main, though, the rifled shot didn’t come down in time to find the back of the net, and the number four was denied an early goal of the season contender.

It was Gibbons who broke the deadlock in the 17th minute, following up Ruthven’s’ free-kick. The centre-forward stood over the ball, which was placed to the left of goal, right on the line of the 18-yard box and powered a low driven shot goalward, stinging the palms of Paul Day. The spilled ball enabled Gibbons to react quickly to convert the rebound from close range.

For the West Yorkshire side, Carlos De Sousa Rodrigues proved to be a threat all afternoon with his direct running from the left, first setting up Samuel Kyeremeh, who would have left Rosso relying on the services of Kian Johnson had his shot not taken a nick off Young. The tricky winger then came again in added time, getting a shot off himself on this occasion, requiring Johnson to tip over the bar.

It didn’t take long after the restart for Horbury to restore parity, playing their way through the Rossington midfield and slipping through Smith, who was able to pick out his finish unchallenged.

Brad Grayson’s introduction in the second-half added an extra threat to Rosso’s forward line and he could’ve put his side back in the lead ten minutes from time. Oli Nowak found Grayson free at the back post, but he couldn’t get a clean contact on his first-time volley to cause any concern among the Horbury contingent.

Grayson was soon involved again though, combining with fellow second-half sub, Franklyn Gordon, who could’ve turned one point into three had Day not been equal to his low effort in the 84th.

As the heavens opened once more, both sides had to settle for a draw, which now means Rossington are five without defeat ahead of next Wednesday’s short trip to fellow play-off hopefuls Penistone Church.
