Rossington Main 4-1 Pickering Town

Match Report by Josh Robinson

A remarkable Reece Fielding hat-trick and a well-taken finish from Brad Grayson earned Rossington a deserved first win of the season in a memorable 4-1 victory over Pickering Town at Oxford Street.

The skipper netted an unlikely hat-trick from a trio of Mason Warren corners in a sensational goalscoring display on his return to the starting XI, while Grayson completed a swift attacking move to open his account for the season.

Greg Young and Ben Hunter made two changes to the side that exited the FA Cup at the weekend, with Fielding replacing Alex Phillipson in the heart of defence. There was also a Rosso return for goalkeeper Kian Johnson, who signed on a dual registration agreement with Buxton prior to the game.

Another familiar face in Adam Watson made his return from the bench, while new recruit Harry Wilson, made his debut in the second half.

Fielding got Rosso off to the perfect start, registering the side’s first goal of the season inside ten minutes, from Warren’s delivery.

The central defender escaped the attention of his marker and expertly anticipated the drop of the ball following Mack Warne’s slight flick-on, casually guiding the ball through a number of bodies and into the back of the net.

Grayson will count himself unfortunate not to have scored earlier in the game, timing his late run on the break to perfection to arrive on the end of Kian Holloway’s cut-back, but his finish just dragged wide of the post with the Town goalkeeper surely beaten.

The chances continued to fall Main’s way, and the lead was extended on 19 minutes when Fielding continued his goalscoring exploits by powering his header past Luke Jackson in goal who could get nowhere near the bulleted effort. Warren once again the architect, picking his spot with an inch-perfect ball from the right-hand corner.

Although The Pikes applied most of the pressure for the remainder of the first period, Johnson was only called into action on two occasions. He first denied former York City striker Michael Coulson, with a strong hand, then blocking another effort from the 38-year-old after Warren had earlier stopped a free-kick routine off the training ground.
In their continued efforts to halve the deficit, Pickering thought they had a goal back just before the break as a clipped pass in the direction of Souleymane Coulibaly was pounced upon by the Spurs academy graduate, but the linesman judged him to have mistimed his run slightly.

Coulibaly was again denied by a raised flag, this time the other side of half-time, in what was a more clear-cut decision for the officials, as the Ivorian had clearly stepped the wrong side of Warne.

It was one lifeline too many for Rosso however, as a first time cross from the far side found Coulson unchallenged inside the six-yard box and he was able to head past Johnson, despite the ex-Scunthorpe man being able to claim a hand to it from close range.

This proved to be something of a wake-up call for Rosso who sprung back into action immediately. Watson almost having an instant impact on his return, forcing Jackson to spill a set-piece into his own goal, but the referee decided to err on the side of caution and give a foul against the stopper.

Rossington got their reward for continuing on the front foot on 72 minutes, when Grayson restored the two-goal cushion. Racing up field, Oli Nowak’s cross arrived in Grayson’s path who could only oblige in rounding off the move with a touch and neat finish into the far corner, wheeling away to celebrate with Young and Ross Hannah in the dugout.

Wilson almost made it a debut to remember, coming close to sneaking his shot under the outstretched Jackson, who required his defender to bail him out when the youngster’s second bite at the cherry was cleared off the line.

But the night belonged to Fielding, who rounded off his hat-trick in stoppage time. Warren flexed his dead ball prowess for a third time, inviting a series of takers to get the defining goal-bound touch, but when the ball evaded the head of Warren, it was only right for the captain to be the man at the back post to bundle home for the match ball and seal Rosso’s first three points of the campaign.

Rosso XI: Johnson, Warne, Green, Warren, Fielding, Currie (74’ Arbouin), Holloway (66’ Hunt), Mitchell, Ruthven (67’ Watson), Grayson (86’ Wilson), Nowak.

Unused: Phillipson.
