Rossington Main picked up their first point of the season at The Skye Direct Stadium on Saturday, putting in a determined and spirited display against a strong Golcar United side in a goalless draw.

Rosso were once again without club skipper Reece Fielding and lined up without a recognised striker in the starting XI but, produced a battling performance full of fight and grit to claim a first clean sheet of the campaign. Greg Young and Ben Hunter’s troops also showed their quality on several occasions, threatening to break the deadlock on numerous instances.

Rosso went close on six minutes, when Mason Warren delivered an in-swinging corner to the back post where debutant Ollie Currie was present to meet it, but was unable to direct his header goalwards.

A miscued clearance from Mack Warne ricocheted off the legs of Harry Mitchell, inadvertently allowing Ashley Flynn the first chance of the game for Golcar, but Tom Wallace was able to comfortably make the save low at his near stick.

With over half an hour gone, Oli Nowak and Archie Micklethwaite teamed up to force a turnover in possession in the final third, the latter threading a pass to Grayson in behind the Weavers’ back line, resulting in keeper’ Hugo Bennett denying an opening goal with his right boot.

Rossington had to dig deep in the second half, seeing off multiple advances from United. The first of which giving the biggest scare as Oliver Russon flashed a cross-cum-shot across the goal face, but nobody was on hand to take up the invitation of turning home.

Rosso played with great resolve throughout the game, and this was best epitomised when tasked with defending a 3v2 Golcar break, where Alex Phillipson produced a lung-busting recovery run to off-balance the onrushing Flynn, preventing a clear strike on goal. The ball did however manage to find its way to Alfie King who could only sting the palms of Wallace.

Rossington fans did have to hold their breath in the final moments though with Flynn finding the ball at his feet from a corner, merely a couple of yards out from goal, only to fire directly at Wallace.

Despite this pressure, the team came through the test unscathed and collected a valuable and well-deserved point on the road.
